Landing in Bangkok at 4:20 in the morning on my birthday sounds exhausting, and honestly, it was. But the Mandarin Oriental turned that sleepy, jet-lagged morning into one of my favorite birthdays ever.
I am going to tell you everything: the room, the breakfast, the spa, the Michelin dinner and, yes, exactly what we paid. I always wish more people shared real numbers, so I am sharing mine.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok at a glance
- Where: 48 Oriental Avenue, right on the Chao Phraya River
- When I stayed: February 20–21, 2026, for my birthday
- My room: Deluxe Premier Room, Twin (two beds), room 1209, with a river view
- What we paid: about $993 per night before taxes, or about $1,170 per night with taxes and fees, booked through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts
- Perfect for: birthdays, anniversaries, and anyone who loves old-world luxury and incredible service
The arrival
Let me set the scene. After ten hours to Istanbul and another long flight to Bangkok, all I wanted was a bed. Instead, a lovely woman was waiting for me with a sign with my name, someone grabbed every single bag, I went through immigration on fast track, and before I knew it I was in a BMW with screens in the back. At 4:20 in the morning, that felt like magic.
Both are extras you book through the hotel: the fast track was THB 3,000 and the transfer THB 4,500 each way. After a flight that long, worth every baht.

The room
We stayed in room 1209, a Deluxe Premier Room with two beds. The hotel did offer us upgrades, and I know, who says no to an upgrade? But the options with two beds were split-level or just didn’t feel right for us, so we stayed put. Zero regrets, because of the view.
The Chao Phraya River right outside the window, boats gliding by, the city waking up on the other side. I could have stared at it all day. Hands down, it was my favorite part of the stay.

And because it was my birthday, the room was decorated with flowers and balloons waiting for me. It is an add-on you order through the hotel (ours was THB 4,300), and if you are celebrating something, it is such a sweet way to walk in.

The lobby, the pool and the little details
Walking around this hotel feels like stepping back in time. The lobby is all old-world elegance, the pool is the perfect break from Bangkok’s heat, and the little details are everywhere. And can we talk about the staff uniforms? The cutest. I could not stop taking pictures.

Breakfast at The Verandah
This is the kind of breakfast you plan your morning around. The Verandah sits right on the river, the buffet is huge (fresh pastries, Thai dishes, all the international favorites and even homemade ice cream), and sitting there with my coffee, watching the boats go by, was pure happiness.

- Price: breakfast was included because we booked through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts. If it is not included in your rate, expect around THB 1,700 per person plus tax and service (roughly THB 2,000 in total).
- Hours: the buffet runs 7:00 to 10:30 am on weekdays and until 11:00 am on weekends.
- My tip: the riverside tables go to hotel guests first, so this is one more perk of staying here.
The Oriental Spa
If you do one thing at the Mandarin, make it the spa. The Oriental Spa sits across the river, so you hop on a little wooden boat to get there, and the experience starts right there on the water. I booked two and a half hours: an hour of massage, thirty minutes of Thai stretching and thirty minutes of body scrub. Exactly what my body needed after all those hours on a plane.
Everything feels like a ritual. You change into a robe, relax in the most peaceful space, and it all starts with a foot scrub. My favorite little detail? For the Thai stretching, the therapists change into a different outfit just for that part. I loved that.

- Our spa bill: THB 10,593
- 2 hour 30 minute signature journeys: THB 8,200, including tax and service
- Traditional Thai Massage (1 hour 30 minutes): THB 4,600
- Hours: daily, 10 am to 8 pm. Book ahead, especially if you want an afternoon slot.
My birthday dinner at Le Normandie by Anne-Sophie Pic
For my birthday dinner, we did not even leave the hotel. Le Normandie, led by the French chef Anne-Sophie Pic, has two Michelin stars and the most beautiful view of the river. We went with the tasting menu so we could try a little bit of everything, opened a special bottle of wine, and at the end the team surprised me with a little birthday cake. Cue the happy tears.

- Our dinner for two, with wine: THB 24,846
- Voyage tasting menu: THB 9,000 per person for seven courses (Prestige wine pairing THB 11,000 per person)
- Open: Wednesday to Sunday, lunch and dinner (dinner from 6:30 pm)
- Dress code: elegant, and jackets are required for men at dinner, so pack accordingly
Let’s talk money: what our stay really cost
I always wish people were more honest about what luxury travel actually costs, so here it is, no filter. This is exactly what we paid in February 2026, for two people. The room was paid in US dollars through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, and everything else was charged by the hotel in Thai baht.
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Deluxe Premier Room, Twin, room 1209 (per night) | about $993 + taxes (about $1,170 total) |
| Birthday room decoration | THB 4,300 |
| Fast track at the airport | THB 3,000 |
| BMW airport transfer | THB 4,500 each way |
| Private car and driver for a day of sightseeing | THB 13,000 |
| The Oriental Spa | THB 10,593 |
| Le Normandie dinner for two, with wine | THB 24,846 |
| Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts property credit | –THB 2,910 |
So, is the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok worth it?
For a special occasion, 100%. It is not the cheapest luxury hotel in Bangkok, but the river, the history, the spa and above all the service made it feel like an experience, not just a place to sleep. My only regret is that we did not stay longer. Next time, I am giving it at least two more nights.
My tips before you book
- Have an Amex Platinum? Book through Fine Hotels + Resorts. Breakfast was included in our rate, and we got a property credit toward our bill.
- Want our room? We were in 1209, a Deluxe Premier Twin with that dreamy river view. You can always ask for it when you book.
- Need two beds? The upgrades with two beds tend to be split-level, so ask to see the layout before you say yes.
- Coming off a long flight? Book the hotel transfer and fast track. Your future self will thank you.
- Celebrating? Tell them when you book and order the room decoration. It made my morning.
- Sightseeing: the hotel can arrange a private car and driver for the day, which is how we visited Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Bubbles in the Forest Café. For the floating markets, we booked a private tour with Smiling Albino (THB 18,361).
Prices are what we paid in February 2026, plus the hotel’s published spa and restaurant rates for 2026. They can change by season, so always confirm with the hotel when you book.
